A new Pew Research Center study explores how dating sites and apps have transformed the way Americans meet and develop relationships, and how the users of these services feel about online dating. Here are 10 facts from the study, which is based on a survey conducted among 4,860 U.S. adults in October 2019:
What is the best dating site for marriage?
Despite its former reputation as being for casual relationships, our insights indicate that Tinder is the top dating site for marriage. According to The Knot 2020 Jewelry and Engagement Study, Tinder was responsible for pairing 26% of newlyweds who met online, solidifying its spot as the most popular dating app.
Do online dating sites make you feel more or less confident?
Some 35% of current or recent users say that in the past year online dating has made them feel more pessimistic, while 29% say these platforms left them feeling more optimistic. Similarly, 32% say online dating sites or apps made them feel more confident, whereas 25% say it left them feeling more insecure.
Why do gay couples meet online?
Internet dating has the potential to serve people who were ill-served by family, friends and work. One group of people who was ill-served was the LGBTQ+ community. So the rate of gay couples meeting online is much higher than for heterosexual couples. You’ve studied dating for over two decades.
How has online dating changed the way couples meet?
For heterosexual couples, online dating has risen to second place – just below met through friends – as the context for that first introduction. Among homosexual couples, digital match-making has skyrocketed. And the knock-on effect is profound. People who meet online tend to be complete strangers, say the researchers.
What do Americans think about online dating?
Overall, three-in-ten adults say they have used an online dating site or app, and a majority (57%) of those users say their experiences with online dating were positive. Most also say it was easy to find people they were physically attracted to and who shared their hobbies and interests.

While there are almost certainly a variety of influences, the network changes resulting from online dating fits the observations perfectly. Our model predicts nearly complete racial integration upon the emergence of online dating, even if the number of partners that individuals meet from newly formed ties is small, say Ortega and Hergovich.
